Eagles are uncommon birds, depicted in the Scriptures as a picture of the victorious Christian life. These six traits of eagles should encourage us to soar higher in our life of faith.

TRAIT #1: Eagles fly at high altitudes, not with low-flying birds like sparrows or other small birds.
Principle: If you want to be an eagle Christian, you need to fly with other eagles and stay away from sparrows and ravens.

TRAIT #2: Eagles have strong vision, with an ability to focus on objects up to three miles away. When an eagle sights his prey, he will not move his focus from the prey until he successfully captures it.
Principle: In order to succeed, we must have a clear vision and remain focused no matter what the obstacles may be.

TRAIT #3: Eagles feed only on fresh prey, never eating dead things. Vultures eat dead animals, but eagles will not.
Principle: Be careful about what you feed your eyes and ears with, especially on the Internet, movies, or TV.

TRAIT #4: When storm clouds gather, eagles get excited. An eagle uses the storm’s wind to lift himself higher, far above the clouds. In the meantime, all the other birds hide in the leaves and branches of the trees.
Principle: We can use the storms of life to rise to greater heights. High achievers thrive on challenges and use them profitably.

TRAIT #5: An eagle tests before it trusts. When a female eagle meets a male and they want to mate, she first tests his commitment. Then and only then, will she allow him to mate with her.
Principle: Whether in private life or in business, one should test the commitment of people intended for partnership.

TRAIT #6: During the time of training her young ones to fly, a mother eagle throws the eaglets out of the nest. Because they are scared, they jump
into the nest again. Next, the mother eagle pushes the eaglets off the cliff into the air. As they shriek in fear, father eagle flies out and catches them up on his back and brings them back to the cliff. This goes on for some time until they learn to start using their wings to fly.
Principle: The people who love us do not let us languish in sloth but push us hard to grow and prosper. Even in their seemingly harsh actions, they have good intentions for us—and these steps are necessary to teach us to fly. Eagles don’t always have a soft and easy life, nor will we. But just as eagles illustrate, God is calling us to wait on Him and learn to soar higher, above the cares, trials, and trivial pursuits of life: “Those who wait on the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.” – Isaiah 40:31

Chinua_Achebe_-_Buffalo_25Sep2008_crop  Imagine if Thomas Edison did not develop a long-lasting, practical electric light bulb  what would have happened to the issue of electric light in the world? And what if Chinua Achebe didn’t opt out of Medicine to pursue ‘the Career’ that was right for him (he abandoned the study of medicine and changed to English, history, and theology), what would have happened to the world of literature? And thank God he became a prolific writer, because he was and is still affecting millions of young people around the world (with profitable gains) through his books. The truth is that if Chinua Achebe had not braced up to discover and develop the right career for him, he would have ended up as an unknown medical doctor in one unknown hospital in some unknown place in the world.

See, each person has a unique CAREER PATH that he/she must discover, develop and deploy, in order for him/her to be SIGNIFICANT and RELEVANT in his/her GENERATION.

WHY DO I NEED A CAREER COACH?

Posted: August 22, 2015 in Career Issues

careerdevimageWhether you are in the Secular or ‘Spiritual’ service-sectors, you have ASSIGNMENTS that must be carried out SKILLFULLY and SUCCESSFULLY. Hence, having a Coach that can assist you in optimizing your performance for maximum results can never be overemphasized.

With reference to Dr. Dave Martin on why a Coach is important- “A coach teaches, motivates and inspires us to achieve the impossible. Successful athletes understand the benefits of coaching. A coach will help enable an athlete to achieve levels of performance that may not have been possible if he relied only on his own endeavors. In fact, talented athletes seek out specific coaches to help them become even more specialized and proficient in their sport. Olympic champions all have coaches standing with them, pushing them, leading them, and providing them with the tools necessary to propel them to the top of their game.”

What is Career Development?
Career development refers to the process of managing learning, work, leisure and transitions at all ages and stages of life. According to Professor Tony Watts OBE in ‘Why Career Development Matters’, career development is the lifelong process of managing progression in learning and work. The quality of this process significantly determines the nature and quality of individuals’ lives: the kind of people they become, the sense of purpose they have, the income at their disposal. It also determines the social and economic contribution they make to the communities and societies of which they are part.

You see people’s work-related needs and preferences evolve and change continuously throughout life. At the same time, the world of work is continuously evolving and adapting to economic, political and social changes. A Career Development Coach acknowledges the complexity of people’s lives and the uncertainty of the world of work; he/she focuses on enabling people to develop the skills to manage these challenges, make good decisions about their working lives, and maximize their contribution to the communities in which they live and work.

For individuals, career development incorporates a wide range of activities related to career planning and decision making. In organisations, career development is an integral part of effective human resource management practice.

So if YOU want to become the BEST that offers ONLY the BEST, then having a good CAREER COACH is highly essential.

Posted: August 22, 2015 in Career Issues

career coachingimagesYour Career is…

1. The WAY you have chosen to make a living.

2.  The PROFESSION you have decided to undertake for a lifetime.

4.    The VOCATION you have decided to discipline yourself to undergo training(s) for, so that through it, you will be able to offer profitable services that can benefit humanity and give you fulfillment.

5.    A CALLING, that is, an inner urge or a strong impulse, especially one believed to be divinely inspired or a strong inner urge to follow an occupation, etc.

achieving-your-goalsIn continuation of the part 1 of this series… To be able to mitigate this issue (of unemployment/underemployment in Nigeria) and also help people to live as “Meaningful Specifics” and not as “Wandering Generalities”, I advice that people should FIRST…

Have and define the RIGHT Career Goal(s) – Because it is a fact that on a general basis people spend most their daily time in an office or in their business premises, it therefore suggests that if a person lacks the ‘Right Goals’ for his/her Career pursuit he/she will end up just as another ‘Wanderer’, in that, he/she will just
be engaged in ‘anything or everything’ just to make money!

See, for you to be able to remain proACTIVE and sustain GOOD SUCCESS in your career pursuit, you must be ABLE to set and achieve GOOD GOALS on a short, medium and long term basis.

Now, to help you set your mind for not just ‘merely’ but ‘proactively’ engaging the goal setting process for greater results, here are some inspirational insights on GOALS:

“The basic principle of human action is that everything you do is aimed at improving your life in some way. Every action of yours is guided by a purpose of some kind, whether clear or unclear. As Aristotle wrote, all behavior is ‘teleological’ or purposeful- aimed at a goal. The remarkable truth is that you always seem to achieve the goals that you set for yourself. Your mind contains a cybernetic, goal-seeking mechanism. Once you have programmed a target or a desire into your subconscious mind, your subconscious and your super conscious minds takes on a power of their own that seems to both drive and steer you inevitably toward the attainment of your goal, whatever it is.”- Brian Tracy

“One of the secrets of the phenomenal success of Mary Kay Ash, founder of Mary Kay Cosmetics was that she had learned to keep a daily to do list and to establish deadlines. You don’t have a goal unless you have a fixed time reference in which to reach it. In fact, someone has defined a goal as a dream with a deadline.”- Mike Murdock

An intriguing study done some years ago on some Yale University graduates concluded that only about 3% of the graduating class (as at then) had written down their goals in life. Twenty years later, a follow-up survey revealed that the 3% with written goals were more successful and better adjusted socially and emotionally, and they were worth more financially than all of the remaining 97% combined. Fascinating, isn’t it?

Having gotten some good insights on the issue of ‘Goals’, the next step now is to join me in the part 3 of this series to get some helpful tips and hints on how to carry out ‘Goal Setting’ successfully.

Do you want to live as a “Meaningful Specific” or as a “Wandering Generality”?  (Part 1)

In my own opinion, the unemployment and under-employment issue we have in Nigeria today is because some people (i) have chosen the wrong career pursuit that they don’t have the ‘capability’ to do well in (and so do not pass the application stage or even when employed are sacked after a while for either under- or non-performance); and (ii) just don’t even know they have the ‘capacity’ to be an entrepreneur (who is an employer) instead of being an employee.

Hence, to be able to mitigate this issue and help people to live as “Meaningful Specifics” and not as “Wandering
Generalities”, I advise that…

To be continued.

What is Career Success?

Posted: January 12, 2015 in Career Issues

The traditional view of what it takes to have a successful career is that you need the right skills and the determination to stick it out until success comes along. While generations have gone to work and spent their career “just sticking it out” this path is not likely to generate career success.

What is Career Success?
Career success is much more than just finding a job and not being fired. True career success combines skill, motivation, determination, and personality to create a livelihood that is fulfilling as well as financially rewarding. You may weight each of these things differently than other people, but they are all in there somewhere if you have a truly successful career.

What Does Personality Have to do With It?
Wait a minute. You parents may have told you that if you work hard, follow the rules and stay focused you will be successful. They told you to develop marketable skills, a strong work ethic and find a good job. They didn’t mention personality at all. What does personality really have to do with career success?

A great deal, as a matter of fact. If you take on a career that does not suit your personality type and provide some sense of personal fulfillment, you will constantly struggle to stay motivated and enthusiastic about your job. In other words, you may perform your job in a satisfactory manner but you probably hate it and have to force yourself to meet your job performance requirements.

If you take on a career that fits with your personality type, you will have far fewer troubles staying motivated, fulfilling your responsibilities and feeling satisfied with your job. Even during difficult times and the inevitable challenges of life, if your career fits well with your personality you will do well.

Personality preferences to consider
Everyone has certain personality preferences and attributes that affect their likes, dislikes, and motivation. When you pursue a career that does not fit your personality type, no matter how strong your skills may be your will eventually struggle to stay motivated.

So what personality preferences should you consider? Here are a few examples:

Structure – Do you like working in a structured, rules-oriented environment? Or would you prefer to be in a more flexible, variable environment?

Rules – Do you follow the rules no matter what? Do you follow the rules for a while until you get bored with them and then start to ignore them? Or do you detest any kind of rules and prefer to make up your own as you go along?

Creativity – Do you like the freedom to be creative and come up with new, innovative ideas? Or would you rather leave that “dreaming” stuff up to someone else?

Regimen – Do you get a sense of safety and satisfaction from following a particular routine each day? Or does doing the same thing more than one day in a row bore you out of your mind?

Freedom – Do you have the motivation and self-discipline to handle the freedom to set your own schedule, develop your own performance goals or work from home? Or do you need someone else to set the boundaries for you and perhaps even guide you along the way?

Formality – Do you like being in formal situations with specific etiquette and behavioral expectations? Or do you prefer a more casual environment where you can be more relaxed and let your personality emerge?

The Importance of Self Knowledge
Assessing your personality type is all about self knowledge. Nobody else can do this for you; it takes honest and sometimes brutal examination of your inner self to truly uncover your personality type and preferences. Once you do this, though, you will be well on your way to matching your personality with a career that is rewarding and successful.

Remember, skills and motivation are simply not enough because eventually your personality preferences will take hold and cause you grief. It is far better to balance personality, skills and motivation right from the start to make a good career choice that will lead to success for you.
